About Us

Celebrating the spirit of Mithila while uplifting 200+ women through heritage, skill, and sustainability.

Welcome to Madhubaniaangan, an India-based organization dedicated to empowering women from Underprivileged communities. With a team of 200 skilled women, we focus on creating sustainable livelihoods through skill development in crafts and entrepreneurship.

In the Maithili region, "Madhubaniaangan" holds deep cultural and artistic significance. "Madhubani" refers to the birthplace of the famous Madhubani painting, a region renowned for its intricate folk art. "Aangan" means the courtyard of a home, which has traditionally been the heart of creativity, storytelling, and community gatherings.

Historically, Maithil women would decorate their aangan with elaborate Madhubani paintings, using natural dyes and symbolic motifs to depict stories of gods, nature, and life. The aangan was not just a physical space but a sacred place of expression, celebration, and artistic heritage.

At Madhubaniaangan, we carry forward this tradition by bringing the essence of Mithila’s rich art and culture into every handcrafted piece, keeping the spirit of the Maithili aangan alive for generations to come.

We proudly promote authentic Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, on a global scale, celebrating its rich cultural heritage. Our programs not only enhance skills but also foster confidence and community support, inspiring women to share their stories and thrive together.

Join us in our mission to uplift women and create a world where every woman has the opportunity to shine!

Madhubani: The Art of Mithila, The Voice of Tradition

Know about Madhubani Painting

A sacred folk art form rooted in mythology, preserved by generations of women, and celebrated across the world.

Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila art, is one of the most celebrated folk-art forms of India, originating from the Mithila region of Bihar. Rich in cultural heritage, this intricate art form is deeply rooted in mythology, tradition, and storytelling.

Madhubani painting traces its origins to ancient times, believed to have been practiced since the era of the Ramayana. Legend has it that King Janaka, the ruler of Mithila, commissioned this art form to decorate the walls of his palace for the wedding of his daughter, Sita, to Lord Rama. Over centuries, this art was passed down through generations, primarily by women, who adorned the walls of their homes with vibrant depictions of Hindu deities, nature, and auspicious symbols.

The paintings often feature gods and goddesses like Krishna, Shiva-Parvati, Durga, and Lakshmi, along with scenes from mythological epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Every element in Madhubani art holds significance—fish symbolize fertility and prosperity, peacocks represent love and beauty, and the sun and moon signify growth and energy.

Originally, Madhubani art was practiced on mud walls and floors of homes, using natural dyes and twigs or fingers as tools. In the 1960s, during a severe drought in Bihar, efforts were made to bring this art to paper and canvas as a means of livelihood for the artists. This shift led to global recognition, transforming it from a household tradition into a widely appreciated art form.

Today, Madhubani painting has expanded beyond traditional themes and surfaces. Artists now create intricate designs on handmade paper, cloth, wood, and even home décor items, fusing contemporary elements while preserving its authenticity. It has also gained international appreciation, with exhibitions and collaborations bringing it to fashion, lifestyle, and modern interiors.

What started as a sacred art form within households has now become a powerful symbol of India’s artistic legacy. Madhubani paintings are not just decorative pieces but a voice of cultural identity, women’s empowerment, and sustainable artistry. With a growing number of artists innovating with new mediums, colours, and themes, this centuries-old tradition continues to thrive in the modern world.

At Madhubaniaangan, we take pride in keeping this art alive, blending tradition with contemporary appeal while supporting artisans and preserving its rich heritage.

From Aangan to Global Stage — Led by Shalini Singh

Founder

“Madhubaniaangan is more than just a brand; it is a movement to bring art, empowerment, and heritage together." – Shalini

Shalini Singh, the visionary behind Madhubaniaangan, is a young entrepreneur dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Madhubani art. Hailing from Rajnagar, Madhubani, Bihar. With over a decade of experience in Madhubani painting, her passion has transformed into a powerful movement of empowerment and sustainability.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when offline markets for Madhubani artists collapsed, leaving them financially and socially vulnerable, Shalini took a bold step. She leveraged social media and online platforms to showcase and sell Madhubani paintings, creating a global digital marketplace for artisans. Her initiative quickly gained momentum, and orders started pouring in, reviving the livelihoods of countless artists who had lost their source of income.

Today, Madhubaniaangan has grown into a thriving enterprise, supporting and providing livelihoods to over 200 women artists. Through her work, Shalini is not just preserving a centuries-old art form but also empowering women and young girls, giving them financial independence and a platform to showcase their talent to the world.

At just 25 years old, she stands as an inspiration—a leader shaping the future of handmade, sustainable art while uplifting an entire community of women.
